| Bangkok Big Switch Project invites you to join electricity-saving competition to win prizes worth 1 million baht in total. By participating in the electricity reduction activity, you can also help combating the global warming challenge. |
| |
| |
| Households living in residential buildings (as stated under Category 1 Classification of the Metropolitan Electricity Authority) in Bangkok, Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan provinces are invited to take part in the 3-month electricity-saving competition, held during August-October 2009. |
| |
| Out of the three months, the month having the least electricity consumption will be identified and compared with electricity consumption in June 2009. 200 participants who save the greatest percentage of electricity consumption compared to the base month (measured in June 2009) will receive environmental-friendly products having a combined value of 1 million baht. |
| |
| |
| The campaign offers 200 prizes of low-energy consumer appliances and other environmental-friendly products for the 200 households achieving the greatest electrical energy saving. |
| |
| |
| |
| * For HSBC credit cardholders, the first 10,000 persons who register for the campaign via SMS will receive 100 HSBC Reward points. (Reward points will be credited into HSBC credit card account before 31 December 2009). |
| |
| |
| At the end of the competition, results will be posted on the HSBC website no later than 31 December 2009. |
| The top ten winners will be contacted individually through the phone number provided at registration stage and will also receive a confirmation letter. |
| |
| |
| 200 participants who reduce their electricity usage by the greatest percentage (compared to the baseline) will receive green prizes, having a total value of approximately 1,000,000 baht. |
| |
| |
| The amount of electricity savings achieved by every registered participant during the three-month campaign will be combined and used to calculate a total amount of carbon (in Kg). HSBC in Thailand and its partners will donate 1 Baht per 1 Kg of carbon. The fund will be used to build a publicly-accessible Green Library which is a prototype for environmental-friendly lifestyles. (*Maximum fund for this project is 3 million baht.) |

Climate change represents the largest single environmental challenge facing humanity this century. As part of HSBC's sustainability strategy, we have always believed we have a responsibility to the local communities in which we operate. In tandem with this, as a global company, we have a broader role to play in responding worldwide to the critical issue of global warming.
Our world’s most dangerous enemy is none other than us - humans. We recognise that this overwhelming challenge to our home cannot be solved by any one agent acting unilaterally. Everyone from every part of society should take responsibility and play their role in helping to reduce global warming.
HSBC in Thailand has chosen a two-track approach that constructively engages people towards this cause: firstly, to disseminate knowledge about global warming that instills a sense of urgency and acceptance of a real crisis; secondly, to encourage the public to take action in order to lessen the direct impacts their lifestyles have on our environment (take less and give back). In this respect, electricity consumption represents one of the most significant impacts to our environment, causing carbon and greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing its wasteful or unnecessary usage will be the objective of a new campaign called "Bangkok Big Switch". |
Bangkok Big Switch Campaign involves simple and practical participation by members of households and schools in target areas. A competition will be organised to recruit participants, gain their commitment to the concept of electricity conservation and, at the same time, encourage them to sustain their efforts toward the goal of reducing electricity usage for a period of three months. The campaign offers 200 incentive prizes of low-energy consumer appliances and other environmentally-friendly products for the households achieving the greatest electrical energy saving.
In addition, Bangkok Big Switch Campaign will invest in the creation of a prototype "Green Room" at a selected school or public building. We believe we can help address the global warming issue through education about its impact on our environment and daily lives and that, collectively, we can reduce energy consumption by shifting to cleaner or renewable energies that minimise carbon emissions. Funding for building a Green Room will come from donations made directly by HSBC in Thailand and its participating partners. The funding amount will be determined by combining the total electricity savings achieved by every participant and converting the total units saved into an equivalent monetary value. The Green Room will be specially designed and built to achieve low energy consumption levels and be environmentally friendly by using fixtures and fittings manufactured from sustainable sources.
To achieve these goals, Bangkok Big Switch Project needs commitment and collaboration from the government, Non-Government Organisations, the business sector, as well as the public.

The month with the least electricity consumption
compared with the base month of June (1,200 units) |
: September (950 units) |
| |
| Therefore, electricity savings |
: 1,200 - 950 = 250 units |
| Electricity savings in percentage equivalent |
: (1,200 - 950) / 1,200 = 20.8% |

The month with the least electricity consumption
compared with the base month of June (2,200 units) |
: October (1,900 units) |
| |
| Therefore, electricity savings |
: 2,200 - 1,900 = 300 units |
| Electricity savings in percentage equivalent |
: (300 - 100) / 2,200 = 13.6% |
| |
| Therefore, Household A achieved a greater electricity savings by percentage. |

| Saving energy is easy. In some instances it simply requires routine maintenance to check that electrical and electronic equipment such as air filters and light fittings are in good working order. In others, it is even easier - you can save energy and reduce your running costs quite substantially just by making sure lights are switched off when not in use and that air conditioners are not placed in direct sunlight. |
| |
| These are just some examples of steps you can take. If everyone plays their part and makes small changes every day, we can all join together and save the energy - and save money while we go about it. |
| |
| |
Replace light bulbs with energy-saving compact fluorescent bulbs. They use 80% less energy but are brighter, have a longer life and are safer.
Use efficient light reflectors |
Use natural lighting or low level lighting where possible |
Turn off all lights when not in use |
Arrange lights in zones for better energy management |
| |
| |
Have your air conditioning inspected, cleaned and tuned by a professional every 6 months Well-maintained air-conditioning will use less electricity and run for longer |
Set thermostats at 25oC and use timer control |
Install heat insulation materials in air-conditioned room |
Clean air filters regularly |
Ensure doors and windows are closed and any gaps or cracks are sealed |
Make sure furniture or other obstructions do not block the air flow |
Use window shades to block radiant heat gains and losses |
Turn off A/C when not in use |
| |
| |
Select appliances that have energy efficient labels as "No.5" Energy Saving appliance |
Turn off computers and other office equipment when not in use |
Select appliances such as fax machines, photocopiers, printers, computer monitors, etc with sleep modes and timers |
Ensure the energy save mode is "ON" |
Use LCD monitors (more energy efficient) |
Use renewable energy appliances such as solar energy calculators |
Do not put hot food in the refrigerator; wait until the food cools down first. |
Avoid using heat generating appliances in the air-conditioned room, e.g. boiling pot |
Unplug the iron for about 5-10 minutes before finish ironing; use left-over heat to continue ironing. |
